Reading comprehension questions - Naked Lunch
My husband is sick, so I'm home watching the kids tomorrow (Thursday). This is what I want you to do during the lesson. If you don't manage to finish, it's homework for Friday (I'll check from home)
First! Here are some explanations to slang words in the text, which probably will make it a bit clearer:
fuzz - the police
H - heroine
junk - heroine
nembies - Nembutal (sedative pill)
bust - tillslag (from the police)
drag - boredom
horse - heroine
cough syrup - cough medicine containing codeine (sedative)
croaker - doctor (one who could and would write a prescription for narcotics)
pimp - hallick (man who gets customers for prostitutes and claims part of their earnings for it)
chick - girl
This time, I want you to answer the questions properly in writing. Read the questions carefully and do everything they ask. Answer the questions on your own, or in pairs, and put the answers in the English folder. If you answer the questions in pairs - make sure to write both names somewhere on the document. After class, I will check your folders.
DON'T WORRY IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND BIG PARTS OF THE TEXT, OR YOU FEEL IT'S WEIRD! Just use the words above, and try to figure out the questions below.

Reading comprehension questions:
- Who is Willy the Disk? Describe him in your own words.
- On page 8, what does the narrator do to escape the police?
- On page 12, how does the narrator feel about Malmö? Base your conclusion on examples from the text.
- How does the narrator get drugs in Houston? (p. 13)
- What is the pimps attitude to other men? (p. 18) Give examples from the text to support your claim.
- What places do the narrator mention he has or is visiting, in these few pages?
Discussion questions, that demand answers that are a bit longer:
- This is obviously a lifestyle that is chosen by the narrator (based on what we know about the Beat generation and Burroughs) - describe the lifestyle and try to explain why Burroughs preferred this lifestyle to a "normal" life (job, house, wife, kids... a labrador).
- Part of the Beat ideal was to try to write in an innovative (new, fresh) style, and the writing style in Naked Lunch is certainly not like other books. Do you think, this kind of experimental writing serves a purpose? What is the positive and the negative sides of writing in this way?

Comprehension Questions on Lolita!
Comprehension Questions on Lolita!
Listen to me say a few things about the Beat Generation
Watch this clip about William S. Burroughs
- The opening of the novel is very famous. In a very few lines, we get a lot of information and a first impression of Humbert Humbert. What important things about Humbert and Lolita do you think we learn? Formulate your response in your own words, and give examples from the text to support what you say.
- Several times, Humbert Humbert refers to "the jury". Who is he really talking about here? Who will judge him?
- What does Humbert do when he notices Lolita waking up?
- What does Lolita whisper to Humbert (p. 135)?
- Humbert Humbert says that "it was she who seduced me". Give examples (I can find three) from the text that support his claim.
- Give a summary of what Lolita's view of sex is (according to Humbert). Base your conclusions on examples from the text.
- In the name of the law, this would probably be condemned as some kind of rape. Do you agree? Is this rape? Why or why not?

En liten hälsning...
Nu när ni ska jobba med den fantastiska boken Lolita, glöm då inte bort när vi pratade om unreliable narrator i samband med American Psycho på svenskan i höstas!
Woop woop!
My
Woop woop!
My
Lolita by Nabokov
When Lolita was published in the United States in 1958, this is what some of the reviews said:
This is Dean Goranites review, which is more laid back and a bit easier:)
- "Most readers will probably become bored [...] at times downright sickened" (The Providence Journal).
- "[T]his book is "distilled sewage" (The New York World Telegraph).
- Lolita is "pornography" (The Chicago Tribune).
The book is still controversial today, especially in the US.
However, over 50 million copies have been sold since, so people are at least... interested.
Review 1 - a bit difficult
Review 1 - a bit difficult
Watch the summary of the book made below by oreadsbooks on YouTube. The questions will help you focus on the story of the book. Watch up til about 4:30.
- Describe the narrator of the book.
- How does Humbert Humbert meet Lolita?
- What's an "indie-cred" novel? (You may have to look this up!)
- Which part of the book is especially famous?
- What is Humbert Humbert's job?
- How does Humbert "seduce the reader" to understanding his side of the story?
Review 2 - a bit easier
This is Dean Goranites review, which is more laid back and a bit easier:)
- Why does Dean define the novel as "creepy"
- How does he describe the main character?
- The main character is NOT the villain of the book, what does Dean think this maight say about Nabokov?
- Why is Humbert Humbert into 12-year-olds?
- What did Nabokov himself say about the book and his concerns about it?
- How does Dean feel about the change in the book?
- What's his advice to readers?
5/2 - English
- You get about 20 minutes (?) to finish the translations
- Compare to the other couple, make necessary adjustments
- Run the original text through Google Translate and compare
- Sum up in class.
