Vi kör en korting engelska idag för att inte försnilla värdefull tid. Länken nedan går till en kort bokrecension som följs av tio frågor. Det är ett exempel från ett gammalt nationellt prov.

Nationella provet i engelska

Writing

Den 2/5 (på torsdag i nästa vecka) är det nationella provet i Writing. Till provet finns ett förberedelsematerial som jag delar ut på tisdag. Om du inte är här på tisdag måste du söka upp mig så att du kan få häftet.

Du ska vara på plats kl. 8.00 i sal A213. Ungefär då stänger jag dörren och ger instruktioner. Kl. 8.10 sätts sedan provet igång och nästa insläpp görs 8.20. Provet slutar 9.50.

Man måste ha egen penna och suddigum med sig. Inga utlån får göras under provet. Jackor och väskor ska ligga i skåpen och ska inte tas med till lektion. Telefonen ges till mig innan provet börjar.

Elever som har diagnosticerad dyslexi (rör tre personer i er klass) går direkt till Studieverkstaden och tar med sin laptop dit. Ni får skriva på dator och får längre tid på er om ni behöver det.

Reading och listening

Den 14/5 (en tisdag) är det dags för reading och listening i sal A205. Både Karolina och jag kommer att vakta. Skrivtiden för båda proven är 8.00-10.40 (med en kort rast mellan proven). Insläppsregler gäller som ovan för det första delprovet.

Vi börjar med readingprovet och tar listeningprovet efter rasten.Om man kommer för sent till listeningprovet görs inget andra insläpp, så antingen kommer man i tid, eller så missar man det.

Samma regler för penna, suddigum, jackor och kläder gäller som vid Writing-tillfället (se ovan).

Speaking

Speaking görs som vanligt i par vid en särskilt angiven tid. Själva provet tar ca. 15 minuter. Ämnets tema är: "Life Balance - Finding the right balance in life and handling time is critical. We have never been busier, juggling school activities with sports, part-time work and homework. On top of that, there are chores to do and a social life to manage".

Provet genomförs på samma sätt som i åk 1 och ni behöver ta med anteckningsmaterial till provet.

Discussion

In groups of three - make your own lists of five things you feel is great about Sweden and living in Sweden, and five things you can think of that seem great about America.

Introduction

In these two clips with Jon Stewart of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart start out by telling the audience that some right-wing politicians are worried about America becoming Socialist - in fact - they have used Sweden as a scary example! To investigate how horrible it is in Sweden, Stewart sends out a reporter to find out what Sweden is really like!

Discussion questions for Tuesday's discussion test

American Psycho (1991) PS. Don't forget to read the last part of extract I gave you!

Based on what we know about Patric Bateman, the narrator of American Psycho, try to describe Patric Bateman's character as well as you can.

"Abandone all hope ye who enter here" are the first words of the novel. The last words are "This is not an exit". Based on the parts of the text that you have read, and based on the video where My talks about post-modernism - why do you think Bret Easton Ellis chose to start and end his novel this way?

Harry Potter (1997)

The reason Harry Potter has become controversial is that some people feel it is anti-Christian. Others feel it is actually pro-Christian. How can the same book be viewed in such completely opposite ways? Discuss the validity of both side's arguments, and try to decide, together, what side you think has the best arguments.

General question on controversial literature

Fiction is really just... made-up stories! Fantasies! Based on everything you know about controversial literature - why do you think literature has the ability to upset and engage people so much? Why do people care enough to want to ban certain books, and why is it so important to fight for the right of those crazy books to exist?

How to prepare...

... for the discussion text (19/3)

This test will see if you have a deeper understanding of the texts, the times, and controversial literature. Everything we have worked on might help you here, although the focus will be on the two latest novels, Harry Potter and American Psycho. To make comparisons between works and see common features in what makes literature controversial and to be able to discuss this is very good. The discussion questions will be posted on the blog on Friday at the latest.

- Make sure you understand the discussion questions
- Go though all the literature, videoclips and presentations and look for information that might help you discuss the questions.
- Look at kunskapskraven to see what I will be focusing on
- Take notes and sort them by the questions (you will be able to bring your notes to the discussion test)
- Think about what you want to say, and practise saying it
- Look up words and expressions you might need

... for the reading comprehension text (21/3)

On Thursday, I will post the extract from Harry Potter that you will have for the test. Read the text carefully, and look up any words that you don't understand. Some terms might be "magical" terms that you can't find in a dictionary, so those words will be "new" for all readers. You may write down the exxplanations for the words on the paper.

From Progress Gold A and Progress Gold B, I have selected some pages that might be useful to you when preparing for our discussions on controversial authors. The first document shows you suitable phrases for giving opinions and the other one shows literary terms that we have used and that you are expected to be able to use correctly when talking about literature. I am not allowed to publish these documents in an open forum so I have posted the links to them in our closed Facebook group.

English - Thursday 7/3

This is the dress rehearsal (genrep) for the reading comprehension questions!

- We will watch part of Mys video about Bret Easton Ellis and the postmodern Era. A summary of things that signifies postmodernism is: intertextuality, paradox, the unreliable narrator and fragmentation.

- Now you will get the text and I will read the first half of it to you. The last part you will have to read yourself in preparation for the discussion test. During the reading test you will have access to a dictionary. Answer the questions below:

1. Summarize the events in the extract in less than 150 words. Don't use the titles of the chapters (Eleven kan förstå huvudsakligt innehåll och redogöra för detta)
2. "Dawn. Sometime in November. Unable to sleep, writhing on my futon, still in a suit, my head feeling like someone has lit a bonfire, on it, in it, a constant searing pain that keeps both eyes open, utterly helpless". What is Bateman suffering from?
3. Why does Bateman light a cigar at the end of the first paragraph? Answer in your own words.
4. Based on the second paragraph - give three examples of things Bateman has done to the girls body. Answer in your own words.
5. Bateman tries to make two different types of food from the girl's body. Which two kinds?
6. Why does Bateman cry at the end of the first chapter? Answer in your own words.

On Tuesday we will have our first discussions on Naked Lunch and Lolita. You need to prepare the discussion questions so that you know what you will say. These are the questions:

Naked Lunch:

1. This is obviously a lifestyle that is chosen by the narrator (based on what we know about the Beat generation and Burroughs) - describe the lifestyle and try to explain why Burroughs preferred this lifestyle to a "normal" life (job, house, wife, kids... a labrador).
2. Part of the Beat ideal was to try to write in an innovative (new, fresh) style, and the writing style in Naked Lunch is certainly not like other books. Do you think, this kind of experimental writing serves a purpose? What is the positive and the negative sides of writing in this way?

Lolita:

1. Humbert Humbert is an unreliable narrator. How do you feel this is noticed in the part of the book we read? If we assume that Humbert is not lying, but just telling us the story the way he wishes to see it, how do you think this situation would have been told if Lolita was the narrator? What would the differences and similarities be?

2. What do you think Nabokov wanted us to feel by creating a narrator that was actually likeable, even though he does things that are so obviously wrong? What is your view on this, is it valuable for the reader to like a character like Humbert?


This is a formal discussion and you should refrain from using slang and informal language. This is an opportunity to show your finest English. Use the correct literary and historical terms that has been presented during the time we have worked on controversial literature. This discussion gives you opportunity to show that you fulfill the two first of the knowledge demands for the task.

1. The opening of the novel is very famous. In a very few lines, we get a lot of information and a first impression of Humbert Humbert. What important things about Humbert and Lolita do you think we learn? Formulate your response in your own words, and give examples from the text to support what you say.
2. Several times, Humbert Humbert refers to "the jury". Who is he really talking about here? Who will judge him?
3. What does Humbert do when he notices Lolita waking up?
4. What does Lolita whisper to Humbert (p. 135)?
5. Humbert Humbert says that "it was she who seduced me". Give examples (I can find three) from the text that support his claim.
6. Give a summary of what Lolita's view of sex is (according to Humbert). Base your conclusions on examples from the text.
7. In the name of the law, this would probably be condemned as some kind of rape. Do you agree? Is this rape? Why or why not?

Om läxförhöret!

I ämnets syfte står det. "Eleverna ska ges möjlighet att utveckla kunskaper om ... kulturella företeelser i olika sammanhang och delar av världen där engelska används". Kända litterära verk är en sådan företeelse. Däremot nämns inga specifika saker om detta i kunskapskraven, där man ska kunna göra svårare saker, t.ex. diskutera och jämföra sådana här företeelser, vilket vi kommer att göra senare.

För att kunna diskutera saker behöver man ha vissa grundläggande kunskaper och det är det jag vill att ni tillägnar er genom att försäkra er om att ni har ett hum om vilka de här böckerna är. Att testa sig själv är ett bra sätt att kolla att man kan någonting. Det kommer däremot inte att synas i responsdokumenten om ni klarar läxförhöret eller inte.

Detta vill jag att ni ska kunna göra:

- Placera böckerna i kronologisk ordning och placera dem i rätt århundrade

- Kunna förklara kortfattat varför de var/är kontroversiella

I would like to get an idea of the kinds of fiction you would like to look into, so without further ado, I present you with this list of 15 controversial books (nrs 2, 5, and 9 are not fiction though, so skip those)

I want you to read the article in pairs, and for every book, figure out:

1. Who found the book upsetting back when it was published - and why?
2. Is the book still controversial? If yes, why, and to whom?
3. Take notes if you have to - we will sum up your answers at the end of class if there is time.

After you have done that, think about the following:

1. What seemed to upset people in "earlier times"?
2. What do we find upsetting today?

Idag har vi först svenska och sedan engelska. Under dessa två lektioner är det ett par saker jag vill att ni hinner med - nämligen följande:

1. Skriva färdigt era inlägg om bilder till bloggen - Instruktion och exempel kan ni se här!
2. När ni är färdiga ska ni flytta över era texter till Wordpress och publicera dem. Information om hur ni gör det finns här!
3. När ni är färdiga med ert eget ska ni kommentera innehållet i andras inlägg. Minst fem inlägg ska ni läsa och kommentera på. Tänk på att tonen ska vara trevlig och att hålla er till ämnet.
4. Ni ska också färdigställa era videoklipp om "libraries and controversial literature". Information om det finns i presentationen i det här inlägget! Jag har bokat grupprummet närmast oss under hela engelsklektionen, och dit kan ni gå för att spela in själva klippet. Tänk dock på att vara väl förberedda när ni går dit, så att det går relativt snabbt. Många kanske vill kunna använda möjligheten att spela in i skolan. Man går dit en och en.

Challenged literature - 15/1

During this theme we will focus on not just fiction in general, but fiction that has been controversial and even banned. The following slideshow is the one I used during class to talk about a discussion here at school about the (erotic) novel 50 Shades of Grey. It ends with a task! My plan for this theme is to evaluate your work in a series of smaller task instead of having one big shebang of a test in the end.

Books That Matter - 15/1

Lesson goal: introduce the theme "Controversial Literature"

Firstly, I would like you to think about what literature can mean, and by literature I mean fiction (skönlitteratur) which is what we will focus on during this theme. Watch the images in the video and think about the following:

1. Which image fits your view on literature the most? Why?
2. What kind of ideas about literature do the images represent? Explain what you think they mean.
3. These images, taken together, gives a very positive picture of literature. Does literature mean other things to you? What, and how could those ideas be captured metaphorically?

Please note: in this clip, literature is represented by physical books, but please, remember that it is literature can also be consumed by audio, or digitally.

Glöm inte dela uppgiften i engelska där du jämför en aspekt av samhället i Sverige med samma aspekt i ett engelsktalande land med mig så att du tar chansen att visa nivå på kunskapskrav även i samhällskunskap!

Engelskan idag

Jag har insett mina begränsningar och kommer inte i morgon, tisdag, pga feber.

Ni som inte har redovisat - filma er själva när ni redovisar och lägg i era engelskmappar på Google Drive. Ni kan ladda upp filmfiler på samma sätt som man laddar upp dokument. Hjälp varandra! Ni som redovisat idag men inte blev nöjda kan göra det samma. Ni filmar på valfri plats.

Tänk på att försöka göra det så mycket som möjligt som en muntlig framställning och inte bara en uppläsning av ert material. Kom ihåg som jag gjorde på mina filmer om American Psycho och det. Det hörs direkt om man läser innantill och det är svårt att nå de högre kunskapsnivåerna om man inte visar på hur man självständigt pratar engelska.
