I want you to read the article in pairs, and for every book, figure out:
- Who found the book upsetting back when it was published - and why?
- Is the book still controversial? If yes, why, and to whom?
- Take notes if you have to - we will sum up your answers at the end of class if there is time.
After you have done that, think about the following:
- What seemed to upset people in "earlier times"?
- What do we find upsetting today?
If none of the novels above interests you, and you want more suggestions, you might want to check out the following books:
Confessions of an Opium Eater, Twilight, Naked Lunch, The City and the Pillar, The Well of Loneliness, Anne Frank's Diary (the uncensored version was released only a few years ago)
We can't take a closer look on all the novels above, so you to the following survey and tell me which ones you're interested in learning more about!
