Comprehension Questions on Lolita!

  1. The opening of the novel is very famous. In a very few lines, we get a lot of information and a first impression of Humbert Humbert. What important things about Humbert and Lolita do you think we learn? Formulate your response in your own words, and give examples from the text to support what you say.
  2. Several times, Humbert Humbert refers to "the jury". Who is he really talking about here? Who will judge him?
  3. What does Humbert do when he notices Lolita waking up?
  4. What does Lolita whisper to Humbert (p. 135)?
  5. Humbert Humbert says that "it was she who seduced me". Give examples (I can find three) from the text that support his claim.
